Having, in the past, enjoyed working with Marcelo Shibata and Marcus Flather, I read with interest their recent contribution to the European Journal of Heart Failure [1]. Their systematic review elucidates the accumulating evidence of the effectiveness of beta-blocker treatment in heart failure. The near equal effect of beta-blockers on both mortality and hospitalisation for heart failure indicates the efficacy of this treatment both in prolonging life and in improving the quality of life through the avoidance of unplanned hospital stays.
