The Working Group aims to promote organised research in the field of heart failure. Heart failure is a major and growing health problem in industrialised countries. Estimates of the prevalence of the condition are few, but suggest that between 1 and 4% of the entire population is affected. The incidence and prevalence rise exponentially with age.

Heart failure is attended by a heavy burden of symptoms and a high incidence of complications. Consequently, the impact of heart failure on the national economies is great, not only due to the need for treatment and frequent hospitalisation, but also due to the loss of gainful employment by the patient and/or their carers.
